Supreme Judicial Council initiates procedure for election of new prosecutor general

By 12 to 4 votes, the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) is launching a procedure for the election of a new prosecutor general.

The question has been raised of the legitimacy of the SJC, whose term of office has expired, and which is incompletely staffed. Justice Minister Atanas Slavov urged the magistrates to take into account the political intentions of putting through constitutional reforms that affect the prosecutor general, as well as the Supreme Judicial Council itself.

The opposite view on the launch of the procedure was expressed by the chairs of the Supreme Court of Cassation Galina Zaharova and of the Supreme Administrative Court Georgi Cholakov, who stated it was not the Council’s fault that someone else had placed it in the position of being incompletely staffed and with an expired term of office.

The candidates for the post of prosecutor general will be heard out on 26 October.

The initiative Justice for All is organizing a protest in front of the Court of Justice in Sofia tonight against the election of Borislav Sarafov as acting prosecutor general.
