The National Assembly has voted amendments to the Energy Act, by force of which as of 1 January, 2026, household electricity users will be on the free market.
According to the texts adopted, as of 1 July next year, the National Electricity Company will cease to operate as a public provider of households, and the Energy and Water Regulatory Commission will not set down monthly quotas of electric energy for the regulated market. The electricity distribution companies will supply household consumers, but if the electric energy they purchase is over the threshold set down by the Council of Ministers, they will receive compensation from the Electricity Security System Fund.
The regulated prices will remain in place until 1 January, 2026, after which households will obtain electricity from traders on the free market.
