Greenpeace organizes protest demanding closure of Maritsa 3 thermal power plant

Before daybreak, six climbers from Greenpeace climbed the 50-metre cooling tower of Maritsa 3 thermal power plant to protest against the systemic pollution of the air and the environment in the region from the coal-fired power station, whose ownership is connected with businessman Hristo Kovachki, Greenpeace has announced.

Other environmental activists stood in front of the thermal power plant holding posters. The energy system of the country is capable of operating without these power plants, the protesters say. The participants are from Bulgaria, Poland, Czechia, Hungary, Austria, Croatia, Greece and Romania.

Power plant officials said the demonstration started at the beginning of the preparations for production launch. When the plant’s security noticed there were people not connected with the power station on the premises, the ignition of the installations was halted and the police were called.
