US envoy to the Western Balkans: Bulgaria will not impose new conditions on North Macedonia's EU accession

US Special Envoy to the Western Balkans Gabriel Escobar told the Voice of America that Bulgaria has assured him that it will not impose new conditions on North Macedonia's EU accession. 

"I had a conversation with my Bulgarian counterparts and they confirmed to me that they have no intention of adding any more conditions. What they want to see is progress on the roadmap that is already in place. We want to work with all parties to make sure that those conditions are met," Mr Escobar said. 

Changes to North Macedonia's basic law to include the Bulgarian minority is a condition in the country's negotiating framework for the second intergovernmental conference to be held and for North Macedonia to start opening negotiating chapters on the road to EU membership, Escobar explained.
