Petrich and Razlog celebrate New Year with mummer festivals

Residents of the towns Petrich and Razlog (Southwestern Bulgaria) are to welcome the New Year with mummer festivals.

The town of Petrich plays host to the traditional Stanchinarski Games. Mummer groups comprising more than 1,000 participants are to present various characters, masks and horo chain dances.Tradition has it that only men participate in these games. However, women and children have also taken part at the Stanchinarski Games in recent years.

The town of Razlog will be hosting the New Year's festival "Starchevata'', also known as "New Year in Razlog" and "Surva". The mummers’ procession will pass through the central town square. Later, everyone will join in the horo chain dance for a happy and healthy New Year.
