India will press charges against the 35 Somali pirates its navy captured from a hijacked ship off the coast of Somalia on 16 March, according to a naval official speaking off the record and quoted by BTA.

This is a change in policy from the Indian military's usual practice of abandoning disarmed pirates at sea after rescuing hijacked ships.

Indian naval forces managed to free the Ruen, owned by Navibulgar and flying the Maltese flag, on Saturday. The bulk carrier was hijacked by Somali pirates in the northern Arabian Sea on 14 December.
In a telephone conversation with Indian President Droupadi Murmu today, President Rumen Radev praised the high professionalism of the Indian naval forces in freeing the hijacked vessel and its crew, including seven Bulgarian citizens.
