Average unemployment rate in the country stands at 5.8%

With an average level of unemployment at 5.8%, the unemployment rate in the city of Sofia is 1.6%. According to data of the National Employment Agency, as of 31 January, 2024, unemployment is highest in the region of Vidin at a little under 16%. In most of the regions of the country (18), the level of registered unemployment is above the average for the country. Montana and Shumen are among the regions with the highest unemployment level – at 13.2% and 11.4% respectively. An average of nine unemployed persons are competing for one job vacancy, with competition highest in the region of Targovishte, where 37 people are competing for one vacancy. Competition levels are lowest in Sofia-city, Silistra, Kyustendil, Dobrich and Varna where 5 people are vying for one job vacancy. Out of 165,000 persons registered at the job centres, 36,000 are with registrations of over one year, and a little over 19,000 are aged under 29.
