Sofia Municipality will take care of 12 unaccompanied migrant children

Sofia municipality takes over the financial expenses of twelve migrant and refugee children without parents in Sofia, deputy mayor Nadezhda Bacheva told BNR. They currently live in a family-type accommodation center and are cared for by a team of nine staff.

It is necessary for the municipality to provide the funds, because the services under the project "Future for children. Provision of comprehensive social support for unaccompanied migrant and refugee children" through the Norwegian Financial Mechanism's "Home Affairs" program are no longer provided.

Meanwhile, a "Safe Zone for Unaccompanied Refugee Children" was opened today at the Registration and Reception Center in Harmanli. Its capacity is 98 people, but in a crisis its number can be doubled.

The zone was created jointly with the State Agency for Refugees, UNICEF Bulgaria and the International Organization for Migration Bulgaria with the support of the State Department for Migration of Switzerland.
