Since the beginning of 2024 until 21 May, 22 people have died at work from heart attacks and strokes, reports BTA citing data from the General Labour Inspectorate.
In the previous year, 2023, 92 people died in the country from non-traumatic injuries at work, 70 of them from heart attacks and strokes. According to Ekaterina Assenova, director of the GIT, the lack of a guaranteed weekly rest period and overwork lead to so-called "burnout", which is the basis for heart attacks, strokes and a number of occupational diseases. People with traumatic injuries died at work, accounting for 65 of the 540 workplace accidents that occurred in the country last year. Only five per cent of the more than 8,300 reports received by the GIT in 2023 concern non-compliance with safe working conditions.
