Mosaics Museum in Devnya celebrates anniversary with open doors day

On open doors day, 15 June, visitors to the Museum of Mosaics in Devnya will be able to see the restored finds discovered in 2023 for the first time. The items in question include pottery and lamps made in the style of the Marcianopolis master craftsmen. The initiative marks the 38th anniversary of the museum.

The Devnya Museum was designed by architect Kamen Goranov and built over the remains of a large building with mosaics from the Late Roman period. In antiquity, the building actually covered an area as big as a whole city quarter. Its courtyard was paved with stone slabs, with a brick well in the centre and lined with limestone columns on three sides. The building contained 21 living quarters and storage rooms covering an area of 1,402 sq. m. in total.

The Museum in Devnya houses some of the best specimens of Roman mosaic art found in Bulgaria. And the most impressive exhibit of them all is the mosaic depicting the shield of the goddess Pallas Athena with the severed head of the Gorgon Medusa.
