MPs will not undergo alcohol and drug tests

The Bulgarian MPs have adopted regulations for the organization and activities of the National Assembly, BTA reported. The majority rejected the proposals of "Vazrazhdane" and ITN to have the MPs tested for drugs. ITN's proposal provided for the possibility that one third of the people's representatives could request the Speaker of the National Assembly to subject an apparently inadequate member of the parliament to a test, as the sanctions that were foreseen if the test was positive, were that the member of parliament would be suspended for three sittings.

In the course of the discussions, Toshko Yordanov from the PG of ITN said that the law that applies to citizens should also apply to the MPs. "About two million drivers get arrested, their home searched, their car confiscated during a quick drug test, while we here can all have fun," Yordanov commented. The MPs also rejected the proposal not to receive remuneration and not to be able to use official cars for the time from the opening of the election campaign for parliamentary elections until the convening of the newly elected National Assembly.
