Bulgaria is the EU country with the highest death rate due to road accidents

20,400 people lost their lives in road accidents in the EU in 2023, a 1% reduction compared to 2022, the European Commission has reported. 

Sweden and Denmark hold the lead for the safest roads, with 22 and 26 deaths per million inhabitants respectively. 

Bulgaria ranks last, followed by Romania. They recorded the highest rates with 82 and 81 deaths per million inhabitants respectively in 2023.
