On April 3, 1879, at the initiative of historian Marin Drinov, Sofia was declared the capital of the Principality of Bulgaria. According to Drinov, Sofia's advantages for being a capital city were its important strategic position being situated on the most important road on the Balkan Peninsula connecting Europe with Asia, as well as the fact that Sofia is located in a vast field that provides comfortable terrain for expansion.

A number of influential foreign architects have been involved in creating the city's urban development plan and transforming Sofia's urban landscape over the decades.
