Covid-19 in Bulgaria: Day 139

Bulgaria ranks 3rd in Europe in terms of Covid-19  morbidity

Bulgaria now ranks 3rd in Europe in terms of morbidity, after Sweden and Portugal, Chief State Health Inspector Assoc. Prof. Angel Kunchev told the Bulgarian National Television. The number of young people infected with Covid-19 has increased. The amount of positive samples stays relatively the same between 4 and 6 percent, Angel Kunchev added and forecasted that the forthcoming wave of seasonal flu may exhaust this country’s health system. Bulgarian society is tired of the measures imposed and people are actively reluctant to comply with them, he added.

Second PCR test of Premier Borissov returns negative

The second PCR test of Premier Boyko Borissov has returned negative, the government press office informs. Earlier today the Military Medical Academy announced that Denitsa Zheleva who heads the political staff of Premier Borissov tested positive for Covid-19 after the return of the Bulgarian delegation from Brussels. The second PCR tests of Borissov and Zheleva returned negative. On Monday, July 20, the government press service announced that two cases of Covid-19-infected employees had been identified, which led to the building being closed on July 21 for disinfection. The government meeting on the following day was held via video conference.

Denmark advises its citizens to refrain from travelling to Bulgaria

The recommendation is due to the increased number of Covid-19 cases in Bulgaria. Copenhagen already warned its citizens to refrain from travelling to Luxembourg, Portugal and Sweden. On Thursday, the Danish authorities introduced a fourteen-day mandatory quarantine for all arrivals from Bulgaria. They are allowed on the territory of the country only if they have relatives there, are travelling for business, education or employment. 

Bulgaria reports 269 new cases of coronavirus, 8 new deaths

In the past 24 hours, Bulgaria has registered a total of 269 newly diagnosed cases of coronavirus with 5,913 PCR tests performed. The highest number of new cases is in Sofia - 53, Blagoevgrad - 34, Varna - 31, in Plovdiv and in Dobrich - 27 each. All confirmed cases since the beginning of the epidemic have reached 9,853, as 4,493 are active. 665 patients are hospitalized. There are 27 patients in intensive care units. 388 people were cured during the past 24 hours. There have been 8 new Covid-19 fatalities. The total number of coronavirus deaths in the country has reached 329.

1 million Bulgarians have donated funds to fight the Covid-19 pandemic

Almost 22 m euros have been donated to support the fight against the coronavirus epidemic, the Bulgarian Donors Forum has announced. The amount was collected in the period March - June 2020. The donors have provided funds mainly for the purchasing of equipment, materials and consumables needed to fight the virus. Over 90% of the aid went to health facilities. In the most acute phase of the crisis, about 1 million adult residents of the country have made donations in various forms.

Bulgarian society is tired of measures against Covid-19

Bulgarians are calm about the pandemic, according to a Gallup poll. 35% of the respondents in July believe the coronavirus is a huge threat, 46% say the coronavirus is like the flu and is not so dangerous, as younger people are more skeptical of the danger. Half of the respondents approve of the work of the National Operational Headquarters. 47% support work from home, 46% have a negative assessment of distance learning in schools.
