The Commission is aware of the protests in Bulgaria and continues to monitor the situation closely. We have made it clear that peaceful demonstrations are a fundamental right in any democracy and we support it. This was what European Commission spokesman Christian Wiegand said in response to a question about the actions of the law enforcement authorities in Sofia last night, Angelina Piskova reported for BNR from Brussels.

National authorities are responsible for enforcing lawful actions, but any use of force must be applied in proportion to the actions of protesters, Wiegand added.
