At the General Affairs Council (GAC) in Brussels, Bulgaria has reaffirmed its veto on the start of negotiations for the accession of the Republic of North Macedonia to the EU. At the insistence of Bulgaria, the Council confirmed that the full implementation of the letter and spirit of the 2017 Treaty of Friendship, Good Neighbourliness and Cooperation between Sofia and Skopje is part of the accession process.

Ambassador Rumen Alexandrov expressed Bulgaria's readiness to continue the direct dialogue with Skopje to resolve the accumulated problems. Bulgaria supported the Negotiating Framework and the convening of the first Intergovernmental Conference with Albania.
Sofia remains committed to the European perspective of the 6 countries of the Western Balkans and Turkey.
