On 11 March, exactly two years after the first coronavirus death in Bulgaria, the death toll from the virus in the country has reached 36,028. More than 18 million people in the world, or three times more than official data, have probably died as a result of the coronavirus, according to an analysis conducted in 191 countries by the University of Washington. The difference is due to the fact that the methodology used includes deaths connected with other medical conditions exacerbated after infection with Covid-19.

The excess mortality due to the Covid-19 pandemic, as the indicator used is called, varies dramatically in different countries. The systematic analysis of COVID-19-related mortality, 2020–21, published by The Lancet puts Bulgaria in second place in the world in excess mortality.
