Bulgarian government discusses compensations for citizens because of high fuel prices

In order to address the rising prices of fuel, the government has been considering 50 liters of fuel per citizen a month to be at a lower price, Deputy Minister of Energy Plamen Danailov has told Nova TV. The measure provides for a discount of about 13 euro cents per liter for gasoline and diesel.

According to Danailov, this would apply to individuals, and the discount would be received directly at the time of charging. The scheme is similar to the compensations and aid received for electricity, Danailov said, expressing hope that all details with traders would be clarified within this month and that the measure would take effect next month.

These compensations are part of the anti-inflation measures that the government envisages together with the abolition of the excise duty on natural gas as a motor fuel. It also plans to reduce VAT on deliveries of natural gas from 20 to 9%. According to Deputy Prime Minister Assen Vassilev, the package will total between 750 million to 1 billion euros and the abolition of the excise tax on natural gas used as motor fuel will cost the budget about 2.8 million euros.
