Ukraine hopes Azovstal fighters will be exchanged for Russian prisoners of war

Ukrainian Deputy Defence Minister Hanna Malyar has expressed hope that the 264 fighters taken out of the Azovstal steel plant in Mariupol will be exchanged for Russian prisoners of war, the Associated Press reported. She made the assumption in light of State Duma Speaker Vyacheslav Volodin's statement that Ukrainian soldiers were Nazi criminals who should be excluded from future exchanges and face justice.

The State Duma is expected to discuss a draft resolution today on preventing the exchange of Nazi criminals, TASS reported.

In a telephone conversation, French President Emmanuel Macron assured his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky that in the coming days his country would increase arms supplies to Ukraine. He added that Ukraine's EU bid would be discussed at a summit in June.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has sent its largest-ever team of 42 experts to probe alleged war crimes committed since Russia's invasion of Ukraine, AFP reported.
