Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Assen Vassilev announced after a meeting with his German counterpart Christian Lindner that the European Commission is working on a joint purchase of about 10 billion cubic meters of natural gas for the needs of Bulgaria, Greece, Romania, and possibly Ukraine.

However, Vassilev did not specify where the fuel would be purchased from, or how it would be delivered and distributed.

Christian Lindner praised Bulgaria for its financial stability and described as "impressive" the low level of public debt, He noted that supporting Bulgaria's entry into the euro area is not a political issue and Bulgaria must meet all the Maastricht criteria, including price stability.
