Sofia wants to preserve consensus in EU decision making

Bulgaria is against the abolition of unanimous decision-making in the EU in a number of spheres, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Velislava Petrova said after the latest General Affairs Council in Brussels.

"The full potential of the Treaty of Lisbon must be used before any changes are considered. We declare ourselves in favor of maintaining consensus in decision-making on foreign and security policy, EU enlargement policy and tax policy," Petrova said.

The Czech Presidency of the EU said that the topic of introducing a qualified majority in the EU for decision-making would be discussed again in October, and that a decision could only be taken by the European Council.
