Bulgaria's two largest trade unions, Confederation of Labour "Podkrepa" and Confederation of Independent Trade Unions in Bulgaria, are taking to the streets of Sofia today in a protest that is expected to cause traffic disruption in the capital.

The action is directed against inadequate policy on workers' incomes. They are demanding a rise in incomes to compensate for inflation, which has reached 18.7% in a year, a rise in the minimum wage from om BGN 710 (EUR 363) to BGN 860 (EUR 440) from 1 January 2023, a rise in all private and public sector wages in 2023 by at least 13%, etc.

Concerning the green transition and its effect on energy workers, the unions are demanding the adoption of a National Just Transition Plan and a skills mapping of coal workers to prepare them for new jobs. They also demand the adoption of a definition of vulnerable energy consumers by the end of 2022 and the introduction of a mechanism to support them financially.
