The family with two children: the Bulgarian model of family planning

Photo: Archive

In 2021, the two-child family model remains the ideal childbearing pattern for women aged 15-49 and men aged 15-59 in Bulgaria (63.3%). The opinion that the family should have three children (17.1%) comes second, followed by the one-child family (7.9%). This is according a survey of reproductive attitudes conducted by the National Statistical Institute.

The reproductive ideals and intentions of Bulgarians often differ from the actual number of children in families. For example, in the case of persons over 45 years of age, for whom reproduction is conditionally over, 44.4% have two children.
