Nearly 642,000 tons of Ukrainian grain have been imported in Bulgaria since the start of the Black Sea Grain Initiative (July 2022-March 2023), show data of the National Customs Agency provided to BNR under the Access to Public Information Act. According to the Ministry of Agriculture, duty-free Ukrainian imports have led to a twofold decrease in farm-gate prices of sunflower seed in Bulgaria. Prices of wheat decreased by more than 30%. In eight months, more than 14,250 tons of wheat, 16,300 tons of corn and 611,000 tons of sunflower were imported from Ukraine, the BNR’s correspondent in Veliko Tarnovo Zdravka Maslyankova reported.

She recalled that grain producers organized mass protests across the country and called on the Bulgarian authorities to stop Ukrainian grain imports because local produce is staying in the warehouses and purchase prices are falling dramatically.
