Farmers remain near Sofia, still ready to protest

The tractors of protesting farmers will not enter Sofia, the chairman of the National Association of Grain Producers, Iliya Prodanov, has told BNR. However, producers dissatisfied with the policy in agriculture remain near the capital city, ready to protest. The branch organizations have discussed the proposals they received from the government after three hours of negotiations. If the protest committee signs an agreement with the government, protesters will disperse.

After two days of roadblocks and demonstrations, Prime Minister Nikolai Denkov announced that the import of sunflower seeds from Ukraine would be temporarily suspended until specific import quotas were negotiated with Kiev.

The authorities will negotiate with Brussels on the conditions for imports of Ukrainian grain, as additional funds to support the sector will also be discussed. The government would grant over 31 million euros in aid to farmers to compensate for their losses caused by the war in Ukraine, Minister of Finance Assen Vassilev said.
