The president should have the right to appoint a caretaker prime minister from among the speaker of the National Assembly, the president of the Supreme Court of Cassation, the governor or deputy governor of the Bulgarian National Bank, the president or deputy president of the National Audit Office and the ombudsman or his deputy, the National Assembly's Committee on Constitutional Affairs decided as it adopted in second reading proposals for amendments to the Basic and Supreme Laws.

The MPs also voted that parliamentary elections should be held no later than one month before the expiry of the mandate of the current National Assembly. The swearing in of the newly elected members would end the powers of the previous parliament.

The constitutional amendments are expected to be debated in plenary on Tuesday. There will be a third reading before they are promulgated in the State Gazette.
