The amendments to the Constitution adopted today by Bulgaria’s National Assembly provide for reforms in the judiciary. The personnel authority of this system will be divided into a Supreme Judicial Council, in which the professional quota will prevail, and a Supreme Prosecutorial Council, most of whose members will be elected by Parliament.
The MPs also reduced the term of office of the Prosecutor General from 7 to 5 years without the right to a second term. The Prosecutor General shall be appointed and dismissed by the President on the proposal of the Supreme Prosecutorial Council. If the head of state does not issue a decree within 7 days of the election, the elected Prosecutor-General shall be considered appointed, the BNR’s reporter Silvia Velikova informed. The amendments to the Constitution must be voted on the third reading.
