The NSI data on inflation in the country are not and cannot be manipulated, as the National Statistical Institute is is subject to monthly inspection by Eurostat.

This was stated in Parliament by NSI President Assoc. Prof. Dr Atanas Atanasov. He was heard at the request of the Vazrazhdane party.

"The National Statistical Institute will not publish data without being sure of its quality," Atanasov said. He denied that there had been any pressure on it to change or manipulate inflation figures, which are one of the country's criteria for joining the eurozone.

Mr. Atanasov said anyone could check the prices of any commodity and determine whether inflation was being reported correctly. According to him, the country's budget deficit will be around 2.2% as of 22 April.
