In the embrace of the Western Balkan Mountains, amid the picturesque Iskar Gorge, lies the village of Bov – a starting point for several hiking routes. The captivating natural scenery and the majestic limestone cliffs make this area extremely popular among both beginner and advanced hikers and climbers.

The name of the village of Gara Bov, as well as the nearby village of Bov, is associated with a legend from the 13th century. In 1206, after the death of Baldwin of Flanders, the captured French knight Saint Boeuf was settled on these lands by Tsar Kaloyan. There, the Frenchman built a fortress, and to this day, both settlements keep the memory of his name.

If you enjoy the murmur of water, you will follow the course of the Stara River, whose bed is crossed by numerous rapids, giving the river a romantic charm.

The trail will take you to one of the popular landmarks of this area, the 40-metre waterfall "Pod Kamiko/Under the Stone".

Near the waterfall, there is a beautiful rock formation called "The Fireplace’’. The 12-meter high "fireplace" is the result of the long-term weathering.

Small villages and hamlets can be seen here and there.

In the village of Bov, you'll be surprised to find a street named after the legendary singer Ronnie James Dio. It probably isn't listed in the official registers. The street name sign was most likely put up by a local fan of the American rock star.

In some of the abandoned houses in the area, you might encounter a grazing cow, seeking shelter from the scorching sun rays.

Kolibishteto Peak attracts lovers of natural beauty off the beaten track. The difficulty in climbing it is not the height, but the lack of trails. However, the efforts of the determined hiker are rewarded with a breathtaking view from the highest point.

The leaves of the old forests whisper stories from centuries long gone, so distant that you will find it hard to believe in their veracity.
