In 2022, 2.78% of the population in Bulgaria was experiencing water shortages (drought), mainly on a seasonal basis. The most affected districts are Lovech (24.9%), Targovishte (19.0%), Blagoevgrad (14.8%) and Pernik (12.9%), according to the National Statistical Institute. The public water supply system provides drinking water to 99.5% of the population.
The total water consumption in 2022 was 43% of the supplied water. The rest - 57% - was water losses. The highest household water consumption was in the capital city of Sofia - 125 litres per person per day, while the lowest water consumption was in the districts of Sliven and Targovishte - 72 litres per person per day.
