The members of the Supreme Judicial Council have neither the legal nor the moral right to choose the next chief prosecutor, given that their mandates have long since expired, former caretaker interior minister Ivan Demerdzhiev told BNR.

On Monday, the prosecutorial collegium of the Supreme Judicial Council is meeting to discuss the procedure for electing a new chief prosecutor.

"We understand how important it is for Delyan Peevski to have a new chief prosecutor and for him to be elected again in some way under his control," commented Ivan Demerdzhiev. According to him, the chairman of the DPS parliamentary group wants to have full control and practically get all the power in the state. The former minister is adamant that a new procedure for the election of the chief prosecutor has been launched by the Supreme Judicial Council by order of  Peevski.

"This is the place for all parties and their leaders to categorically oppose this, and for the institutions to realize their responsibility, maintain their authority and not succumb to influence," he concluded.
