Disciplinary check over case with Judge Andon Mitalov after US sanction

The Judges' College of Bulgaria's Supreme Judicial Council have decided to initiate a disciplinary inquiry into the case of the Special Criminal Court Judge Andon Mitalov. Earlier this month, Mitalov became the first Bulgarian to come under US sanctions because of significant corruption, receiving a ban on entering the United States. The decision for a check comes at the backdrop of the request of Justice Minister Danail Kirilov for the judge's dismissal.

Radio Bulgaria recalls that in November 2019, Mitalov issued a permit to the leader of the Russophile Movement in Bulgaria, Nikolai Malinov, for traveling to Moscow in order to receive the Druzhba Order from President Vladimir Putin, despite the fact Malinov was charged with espionage.
