Bulgaria reports 146 new cases of Covid-19, 793 people currently in hospital

Nearly 4,000 tests have been performed in the last 24 hours as 146 people have tested positive for coronavirus.. According to the National Information Portal, there are currently 793 people in hospital, as 43 of them are in intensive care units. 

77 people have been cured in the last 24 hours. Two people have died.

The total number of infections since the beginning of the epidemic is 11,836 people, and the active cases are over 5,000.

There is no second wave of Covid-19 in Bulgaria: Head of Microbiology Institute at BAS

During the past 24 hours, the highest number of new Covid-19 cases has been registered in Sofia and Varna, with 29 people in each city, according to the National Information Portal. The number of infected people hospitalized for treatment is also growing. However, in an interview for NovaTV, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Penka Petrova, director of the Institute of Microbiology at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, said that this was not a second wave of Covid-19.

Most likely a second wave will come in late autumn and early winter, said Dr. Petrova. Then the cases of coronvirus will be mixed with the flu cases, but on the other hand there are many reliable drugs in the world that are already available, she added.

Tennis player Victoria Tomova tests positive for coronavirus at tournament in Palermo

At the tournament in Palermo, Bulgaria’s tennis player Victoria Tomova gave a positive test for the new coronavirus at the tournament in Palermo. The athlete has been placed in isolation in a specialized hospital, but has shown no symptoms so far. Tomova was supposed to start her qualifying match against Marta Kostyuk (Ukraine), but was replaced by Daniela Seguel (Chile).

The WTA Palermo Open is the comeback event which marks the resuming of the tennis season after a five-month halt.

Ilinden Fair in Pernik cancelled over Covid-19

Due to the extraordinary epidemic situation, the traditional Ilinden Fair was replaced by a documentary film screening, a BNR correspondent reported. In the morning, in the church of St. Prophet Elijah in Pernik a solemn liturgy was celebrated. Instead of the traditional concerts, the organizers have prepared a film related to the history of Pernik's Moshino and Iztok neighborhoods, which can be watched online. In the film, celebrities born in this part of Pernik, such as the writer Zdravka Evtimova and the conductor Yuli Damyanov, tell exciting stories.
