Dolmens are ancient megalithic structures, horizontally-fixed massive stone slabs that are connected with the religious beliefs of the ancients. Researchers say that in Bulgaria, the highest concentration of such structures is in the mountains Strandzha, Sakar and in the Eastern portion of the Rhodopes.
There are more than 600 dolmens described in Sakar Mountain. The locals call them “dragon holes” – people once believed there were dragons living inside them, dragons being the epitome of manly strength. There are numerous songs and legends in Sakar about dragons with golden wings who lived in these stone houses – find out more about them HERE
