The Road Trip Index 2022 by the leading world travel application KAYAK breaks down 33 countries by 24 individual factors depending on what they each offer and the type of trip one wants to take. The rankings from this study are divided into five different road trip types: Sustainability, Camping & Outdoors, Nature & Landmarks, Budget and Safety & Comfort. Each of these types uses multiple factors that each have different weights, depending on their impact on the attractiveness of a road trip.

The results show that the countries with the highest rating in all five road trip types are: Serbia (budget), the Netherlands (sustainability), France (camping, nature and landmarks), and Switzerland (safety and comfort).

With the increase in fuel prices this year, drivers tend to prefer budget travel, with more attention to their spending. In this sense, Bulgaria is recommended as a cheap destination, coming 5th in budget travel. Fuel prices in this country are among the lowest in Europe (with А 95 petrol at around EUR 1.74). The same is true of car hire and hotel prices, as well as parking fees. Hiring a car in Bulgaria costs an average of EUR 34 a day, making it among the most affordable prices out of all countries on the list.
