The forthcoming Spanish EU rotation presidency starting on 1 January 2010 till the middle of next year, has laid out four top priorities after the enforcement of the Lisbon Treaty on 1 December, said Spanish Ambassador to Bulgaria Jorge Fuentes at a forum in Sofia over the weekend. The forum was organized by Bulgaria’s Atlantic Club and its subject was “The Lisbon Treaty, new European priorities in the aftermath of 2009-2010”. While opening the forum Bulgarian Foreign Minister Dr. Rumiana Jeleva said that the Lisbon Treaty was an important step in building the EU. It delivers more effective working tools and closer integration of member states, and brings its institutions closer to citizens.

The first priority of the Spanish EU presidency has to do with the enforcement of the Lisbon Treaty aimed at streamlining European institutions in tune with new EU needs. Ambassador Jorge Fuentes recalled that under the treaty the functions and powers of the European Commission and the European Parliament are set to expand; a new EU diplomatic service is created, as well as new top jobs of EU president and foreign minister.

The Lisbon Treaty enforcement is a sound proof that collective efforts in the European context lead to attaining goals, as well as that member countries have the potential to strengthen the EU’s role as a global player, Minister Jeleva thinks. She vowed that Bulgaria would continue to contribute to the efforts of strengthening the European Union in both domestic and international terms.

“All Lisbon Treaty priorities are also Bulgaria’s priorities, because Bulgaria is a member state”, Dr. Jeleva said for Radio Bulgaria, and specified how Bulgaria could add weight to its contribution: “Starting from Afghanistan, across Asia and reaching the Americas: everything that creates opportunities for the development of relations, should be put to good use”, concluded the Bulgarian foreign minister.
