Following poor performance during the second half time FC CSKA of Sofia lost 0:1 as guest to Fulham in the fifth match from Europa League. CSKA missed as early as the third minute, and for most of the match the hosts proved better resulting in Fulham’s 0:1 win. Champion FC Levski of Sofia played in Europa League too, losing a fifth consecutive match, this time versus Villareal FC. This sent Levski to the last notch in Group G as the only team from among 48 ones without a single goal scored so far, and without any scored points either.

The end of the year brings the traditional annual charts. One of the first charts was topped by Bulgarian national football side captain and Manchester United star Dimitar Berbatov, who has been named Man of the Year. During the ceremony Berbatov said he was now after the Golden Ball Award.

Now to volleyball. CSKA won a set but lost the game versus Zenith, Kazan 1:3. The Sofia-based team started its first match from Group G of the Champions League by winning a set, but this was hardly enough for a victory over the 2008 European champion. The next match of CSKA is on Thursday when it plays at home versus Tours, France. This is the team with whom national volleyball player Vladimir Nikolov won the Champions League.

During the second edition of the European women’s league in the summer of 2010 Bulgaria will be in the same group with Serbia, Romania and UK. Turkey, Spain, Greece and Israel are in the other group. It is still unclear whether there will be a third group including France, Croatia, Belarus and Poland. In the debut edition of the European league last year the Bulgarians ranked third.

Spartak from Pleven, Central Bulgaria, scored a third loss in the Balkan Basketball League. Playing as guests the Pleven team was defeated 79:93 by Feni Industries in Kavadarci, Macedonia. In the same tournament Rilski Sportist from Samokov, Western Bulgaria, beat 83:80 as guest Lovchen, and ranked second in the group together with the Bulgarian team Euroins Cherno More and with Lovchen. Playing as host in Varna Euroins Cherno More beat the Macedonian team of Rabotnicki, 86:76. Levski of Sofia beat Steaua of Bucharest 75:69. This brought Levski an equal score with the leader in the interim rankings, OKK Belgrade.

Bulgarian Dimitar Kuzmanov was named Tennis Player of the Year under 16 in the traditional chart of the European Tennis Association. The young hopeful finished the season as No. 1 in this age group after he reached the finals of 5 tournaments and won three of the total of 7 tournaments that he had joined. Dimitar Kuzmanov is the second Bulgarian after Grigor Dimitrov to win a prestigious prize in the junior rankings. In the rankings for girls under 16, European champion, Bulgarian Victoria Tomova ranked second.

Apart from eight quotas for the Winter Olympics in Vancouver, the Bulgarian athletes stand chances of winning 5 extra quotas. So far we have 3 quotas in alpine skiing, 3 in the cross-country and one in snowboarding and ski jumping each. We stand chances to get 3 extra quotas in snowboarding, 1 in alpine skiing and 1 in ski jumping. The target of Bulgaria’s best alpine skier, Austria-born Kilian Albrecht, is a place in the special slalom top ten. Bulgaria hopes to win a medal in snowboarding in the person of young Alexandra Zhekova.
