Bulgaria’s Surgical Society warns that there is lasting tendency for an ageing of practicing surgeons. The average age of experts in the profession in Bulgaria is 56, it became clear at the 14th national Congress of surgeons taking place in Sofia. Young surgeons up to 35 in this country are only 135 and 113 of them work in the cities. Some 150 retired surgeons, aged 75-80 continue to work in surgery wards, while 75 positions for surgeons remain vacant. The Surgical Society relates these figures to the low payment in this country. Young surgeons in Bulgaria start work with salaries of EUR 383, while in most places abroad they are welcomed with a remuneration of at least EUR 3 000.
