UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova seems to be the strongest Eastern European candidate for the post of UN secretary general, says the American edition Diplomatic Courier. It based its conclusion on the appraisal of the Eastern European candidates for the position, taking into account a variety of criteria including leadership, management skills, experience in international relations, experience in UN, language competences, acceptability for the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council and gender.
The overall assessment of Irina Bokova is 4.5, with a maximum possible 5. Following the evaluation of all criteria, the publication believes that the biggest problem for the Bulgarian candidate will be the mobilization of sufficient domestic support in Bulgaria.
Diplomatic Courier lists also other potential candidates for UN Secretary-General from Eastern Europe, as the edition gives the highest score after Bokova to the former President of Slovenia Danilo Türk.An emergency epidemic situation will not be introduced in the country due to the spread of pertussis (whooping cough), as this is not necessary.
