The Flora exposition center in Burgas became the birthplace of a representative of the largest butterfly specie in the world – Attacus Atlas, better known by its shorter name – ATLAS. Four more pupae are expected to open any moment. However, visitors have only several days to see these butterflies. After they hatch, the Atlas butterflies do not feed and live only as long as their nutrition reserves collected in their caterpillar phase permit. That is why their life is very short – 2-3 days only! The Atlas butterfly is a true giant. Its wings can reach 30 centimeters when open. Females are larger than the males. In the dark this butterfly can easily be mistaken for a bird because of its large size. Photo: BTA
