September 22 is declared Open Doors Day at the oldest salt-extraction site in Europe – the Provadia Salt Mine (5500-4250 BC). The archeological complex consist of a salt extraction center and a necropolis, has been studied since 2005 by a team of the National Archeology Institute with Museum of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS), in cooperation with the History Museum of Provadia and the participation of other Bulgarian and foreign experts. Research on the site goes parallel with terrain works for conservation and restoration of stone structures, especially the stone fortress built at the beginning of the late stone-copper era – around 4600 BC.
