Close to 60% of the pharmaceuticals imported from countries of the European Union are re-exported.

Besides, during the past two years 2/3 of companies have not declared before the Executive Drug Agency any intentions to export medicines, patient organizations argue. According to estimates from patient organizations the volume of the parallel export of pharmaceuticals comes to 1.5 billion leva (767 million euro).

Stoicho Katsarov from the Center for the Development of Bulgarian Healthcare has said that the problem is not in drug exports but in the fact that people remain untreated.

In connection with the claims of patient organizations the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF) has said that this is disinformation and manipulation. NHIF has admitted it has provided to the organizations information requested by them but that it has been presented in an incorrect way.
