Over 10,000 ha of wetlands along the Danube region and including Bulgarian territories have been restored over the past 10 years by the WWF. On February 2 – World Wetlands Day environmentalists pointed out that till recently some 80% of these wetlands had been destroyed in the Danube region, which collapsed river fishery. Wild carp for instance turned into an endangered species due to the drying of Danube swamps. Wetlands contribute a lot to our quality of life, for instance in terms of flood protection and clear water provision. The large quantities of carbon dioxide preserved in those make them essential for climate change prevention, WWF experts go on to say.
