The centuries old beech forests in the Central Balkan National Park (in the Balkan Range) are becoming part of UNESCO Serial World Heritage entitled “Ancient and primeval beech forests of the Carpathians and other regions of Europe”. The government has endorsed a joint declaration for the proclaiming of this trans-border site, which spreads over the territories of 12 countries: Austria, Albania, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Germany, Italy, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain and Ukraine. Through this declaration the participant countries engage to create an integrated system for management of the serial property for the purpose of its protection.  Photo: BGNES archive
