Popular Bulgarian brands of yoghurt, yellow cheese, lyutenitsa, cheese etc. will receive European protection within 2 – 3 months. Legislative changes will be voted then for trademarks and geographical indications, so the national protection of the products will drop. Those amendments were actually due 9 years ago, in order for those foods to enter a European register, keeping their original Bulgarian names. As the authorities in charge didn’t inform the Bulgarian producers for the criteria of the European register, now the state had urgent negotiations with Brussels for keeping the rights for producing Bulgarian foods. Entities from other EU member-states will have to mark their production with a label, pointing at the Bulgarian origin.
