President Radev worried over actions for annihilating livestock plague outbreaks

Bulgarian President Rumen Radev has said that he has been following with concern the actions of the government for the annihilation of livestock plague in farms located in Strandzha Mountain close to the border with Turkey.

In a release circulated by his press service the president states that authorities owe an answer to the question whether the current mass slaughter of healthy animals will in the future too be the only measure for handling similar crises.

Rumen Radev is asking competent authorities why no precautions have been taken such as quarantine, surveillance and inoculation. He points out that the crisis with the animal plague has once again put the issue of the reliability of the fence built along the border with Turkey.

European Commission experts are due to arrive in Bulgaria today for a five-day check into the way Bulgarian veterinary authorities have been enforcing European law for fighting infectious diseases.
