Three teams of archaeologists are starting excavations at Trapezitsa fortress in Veliko Turnovo. The financing, amounting to 38,000 Leva, is provided by the Ministry of Culture.

Prof. Konstantin Totev from the Turnovo branch of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences’ National Archaeological Institute with Museum will continue to uncover the authentic architecture in the section adjacent to Trapezitsa’s newly erected western wall. Restoration work will continue.

Ass. Prof. Dr. Deyan Rabovyanov will be working on the church uncovered last year, in which unique finds were discovered – a magnificent icon, crosses and repoussé covers used in the church’s consecration.

Veliko Turnovo municipality is funding the resumption of the suspended dig in the southeast sector of Trapezitsa hill, where a big feudal complex has been unearthed. Right next to it, a church with an elaborate construction has been discovered, though so far it has only partially been uncovered. Once archaeologists resume their work they will be able to find out what it was used for – a monastery complex or an episcopal residence.
