Many Bulgarian towns and villages host wine festivals in February. Southwest Bulgaria is among the leading Bulgarian regions in vine-growing and wine-making due to its mild climate and warm Mediterranean winds. Twenty two-year-old Petar Mihov was crowned as the Wine King at the Festival of Wine held for the 27th time in the village of Ilindentsi, Strumiani municipality. The wine festivals continue this Saturday and Sunday in the village of Delchevo nestled at the foot of Pirin Mountain. The smallest Bulgarian town Melnik also hosts a wine festival this weekend. Bulgaria’s Vice-President Iliana Yotova is expected to attend the wine festival in Delchevo. Vice-President Yotova will join the traditional vine-pruning ritual. The wine festival in Melnik is named Golden Grapes. The guests will be able to enjoy the wonderful taste of the local wines. The legends have it that once Winston Churchill himself drank Melnik wine with pleasure. All wine producers from the region were invited to join the traditional contest for best homemade wine from the vine sorts Broad Leaf Melnik and Buket (wine made of different sorts). Local and guest amateur folk groups will participate at the rich folklore programme and turn the 8th edition of Golden Grapes into real festival of wine and love.
