Bulgarian Orthodox Church honors Saints Constantine and Helena

Photo: БТА

On May 21 the Bulgarian Orthodox Church honors the Equal-to-the Apostles Saints Constantine and his mother Helena (Konstantin and Elena). In 313 AD Constantine issued the Edict of Milan which introduced Christianity as official religion in the Byzantine Empire. According to folk beliefs, any farm and field work is prohibited on this day. The feast is seen as a day to prevent the harvest from hail, because Helena and Constantine are believed to carry hail in a bag. In Bulgaria this day is also celebrated by fire dancers in the Strandzha Mountain region.
