The Bulgarian Foreign Ministry is urging the authorities in Australia to hold the people who set fire to the Bulgarian flag in Melbourne accountable.

The incident took place during protests against the Prespa agreement. On instructions by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ekaterina Zaharieva the chargé d’affaires of the Bulgarian embassy in Australia Petar Nikolaev has requested a meeting at the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade regarding the incident.

The Prespa agreement is a bilateral agreement between Greece and the Republic of Macedonia, reached with the help of the UN. By force of this agreement the Republic of Macedonia is renamed to the Republic of North Macedonia. The resolution of the long-standing Greek-Macedonian naming dispute paved the way for the country to open negotiations on membership of NATO and the EU.
